How to believe in yourself:

  • Establish your values, your personal manifesto, your line in the sand
    • What do you believe in and why is it important?
    • What is non-negotiable for you?
    • Remember that 100% is easier than 98%
      • Witness movie and leaving leather
    • Why is this so important??
  • Awesome questions
    • What’s awesome about me?
    • Why do people like me? Love me?
    • What am I awesome at?
    • What could I do one-handed with 5 vodka tonics in me?
  • Lean on past successes
    • Past performance is great predictor of future success
      • ex: football league, starting a business, having an infant
    • If you’ve done it before, strong chance you can do it again
      • Key is it’s not the THING you did, it’s that you were successful.  Keep that in mind
  • Accept the inalienable truths about others
    • They are scared too
    • They are unsure
    • They don’t want to look stupid either
    • You see their daily highlight reel, NOT when they are upset, crying, snoring, drooling
      • You see their best public self
        • Take a look around the gym, the coffee shop and you’ll see what I mean
          • The hot girl in yoga pants? She woke up with bad breath today. She thinks she’s fat. Maybe she hates her body.
      • Don’t compare their highlight reel to your behind the scenes life, scars and all
  • Be comfortable being uncomfortable
    • Not knowing
    • Not being sure if you’ll be accepted
    • in a place to get rejected
    • The beauty of being comfortable in this space is that it liberates you completely
  • Realize you are stronger than you think
    • More capable and more resilient than you can imagine
    • Think right now of 3 times you did something you didn’t think you could do
      • How did that feel?
        • Liberating, free’ing, f’ing awesome
      • What makes you think you couldn’t do that again?
  • Ignore the noise
    • Forget the haters and the naysayers
    • Example:
      • Muhammad Ali vs. Sonny Liston 1964
        • Ali was given almost no chance. People thought he was actually going to get really hurt against Liston and some even thought he might die in the ring.
        • He won in the 7th round, TKO, Liston spit out his mouthpiece
  • Sweat it out
    • Exercise dramatically increases your belief in yourself
      • Exhibits discipline
      • Releases endorphines, “feel good” vibes
      • Kaya- exercise, eat more protein, drink more water - my answer for almost any “not feeling good” problems
    • Every step you take is a validation of you doing something. You are not just sitting on the couch.
    • What your brain hears when you’re moving/working out:
      • You moved a foot.
      • You moved a foot and we didn’t die.
      • This is good, let’s do more!
